Fashion Week 2012: Stylescape 2012

by Rebecca Pollock

This years spring fashion show was influenced by urban trends, and many of the participating designers and stylists took inspiration from cities both near and far. Creative director Tess Babbitt’s efforts were well received by the audience. The large collection of parents and students, along with the models on stage, were clearly enjoying themselves– audience members even bobbed along to the runway music. The runway show was divided into two parts: collections by student designers and collections by student stylists. The first collection to walk the runway was reminiscent of the club scene and featured bold neons, studs, and deep blacks. Like many of the other collections presented, designers Maddie Rain and Dana Nurse chose sheer fabrics and crafted elegant floor length skirts.

Johanna Silver presented her line next. Her models wore acid washed fabrics and lace, as well as sheer, fabrics. As Johanna explained it, her line encompassed a modern, Latin feel. Kate Spalla’s line walked the runway next with four, dark gowns. As her mature, fourth Fashion Week collection, Kate toyed with aesthetics by using deeply texture fabrics. The effect was sophisticated.

Kevin Barbagallo’s line followed. His narrative collection can be best described as “urban battle gear,” featuring many standout pieces like a hot pink, Marilyn Monroe patterned dress and a lustrous feathered collar. A nontraditional approach to the runway, Kevin’s collection was both daring and bold. Finishing up the designer portion came Eric Maxwell’s collection. His color pallet of blacks and golds felt very refined, and the gold-painted eyebrows of his male and female models added to his overall presentation. Keeping with the trends, Eric also created beautiful, floor-length gowns and used sheer, as well as tool, fabrics.

After an urban-workout inspired dance routine, stylists presented their collections. First up was Emily Tannenbaum and Valeria Navarro. Their collection bespoke of confidence with it’s glamorous looks and spring vibe. Audrey Geiger sent her models down the runway next wearing a Settle inspired, midnight-in-the-rain look. Her models stood out because of their dramatic makeup, a pink wig worn by top model contestant, Mary Kate Nyland, and a fierce tool fabric mask.

The third stylist collection was presented by Kelsey Leahy and Dana Isernio. Their models walked the runway barefoot in summer beach looks. The soft colors used were accented well by the bold geometric designs worn on the models faces and feet as part of the makeup. Laurel Salisbury  and Megan Nicholson followed with a collection full of soft, vintage colors accented by pops of glitz and glitter. Most notable might have been the paisley shorts worn by model, Nicholas Brownson. Finally, Stas Ledoskikh sent his Russian inspired line down the runway on talented models, himself included. His collection featured blacks, blues, and reds, but stood out for his choice in dramatic and fierce high heels.

Eric Maxwell won best designer, Laurel Salisbury  and Megan Nicholson won best styling, and Landry Allbright was named Emerson’s Next Top Model.

All of the students involved, designers, stylists, and models alike, as well as the members of Fashion Society, worked hard to pull of such a well-coordinated event, and the effort showed. Proceeds from all three fashion shows held will be donated to the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund in support of educational programs for the arts, community service, and healthy teen relationships. Congratulations to all involved!

Ribbons on the Runway

by Jenna GreenBerg

Sunday March 25th 2012 marked the 8th anniversary of Ribbons on the Runway. Ribbons on the Runway is an annual charity fashion show and silent auction event that Emerson’s Alpha Epsilon Phi chapter holds every year to support Sharsheret, an organization that supports Jewish women and their families who are struggling with breast cancer. It is the organization’s biggest fundraiser. This year the show was a huge success. The committee was working on the event for months in advance in order to ensure that it was the best show to date. This year’s show featured major designers and boutiques such as Betsey Johnson, LF Boston, and Jack Wills, as well some local companies like Enamour, Kokoon, and Lipstick Boutique. All the hair and makeup was generously provided by Roffi Salon, ensuring that all the models looked beautiful. The models themselves were all Emerson students, and the event was completely run by their Emerson peers and Sisters of Alpha Epsilon Phi. The show went flawlessly starting with the edgy clothes of LF and finishing with a preppy spring line from Jack Wills. Enamour showed a modern, black, white, and red cohesive line while Kokoon leaned towards a bright beachy line. Lipstick featured short and fun spring dresses, and Betsey Johnson stole the show with 15 bright, young, and girly looks.

Overall the show was impressive. Below are some pictures from the event.
